Description

‘Dragon Maths 5’ Third Edition is a 140 page write-on student workbook that contains a full mathematics programme suitable for most Year 7 students. It revises work at mathematics curriculum Level 3 and starts work on Level 4. It guides students through the Multiplicative Stages (stages 6-7) of the Number Framework. This revised edition includes two new chapters devoted to combining strands into challenging problem solving tasks (Number together with Algebra and Geometry together with Measurement). These chapters require students to understand both topics to solve a range of real life problems. There are also some extra pages devoted to numeracy practice - additions, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each chapter is based on a strand of the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum document. The Number and Algebra strand has been allocated 6 chapters (75 pages) to adequately cover all the numeracy strategies currently being taught in primary schools. A revision test is provided at the end of each chapter. 'Dragon Maths 5' features instruction boxes, worked examples and a full set of answers (removable) to help students work independently of the teacher. The best use of this resource is as a classwork/homework book after new maths ideas have been introduced and the class has done some closely supervised work from texts. It can also be used as a revision resource before national standards tests or as a catch-up text for students who have missed school or need to fill gaps in their maths knowledge. Students working on this resource will find the write-on format saves them copying time. The instruction boxes and worked examples reinforce classroom learning and help parents to become effective 'home-teachers' as they can now assist their child using current maths strategies instead of older methods. The removable answers (perforated pages) allow the student or parent to mark the completed work, or the teacher may choose to hold the answers in the classroom for a more formal marking/revision session. Chapters: 1 – Whole Numbers 2 – Number Facts 3 – Decimals 4 – Fractions 5 – Algebra 6 - Number and Algebra 7 - Measurement 8 – Geometry 9 - Measurement and Geometry 10 – Statistics

They look interesting, are easy to carry and since they are write-on, you don’t have to worry about finding or filing messy separate maths worksheets . Year 7 maths and Year 8 maths are critical pre-secondary learning years and the DRAGON MATHS workbooks allow you to do something really positive to assist your child’s learning for very little outlay. Maths might have changed since your school days, so the page by page instructions are vital to keep you up with how maths is currently taught. These resources will allow you to help your child at home in an effective way. DRAGON MATHS workbooks are interesting, absorbing and fun to do with your child at home. If your child is struggling with maths, we recommend you buy a book aimed for a lower year level, for instance 'Dragon Maths 4' for Year 7, 'Dragon Maths 5' for Year 8. Sample pages are a great place to start - get your child to view them and if they find them too easy, go to the next book in the sequence. For Teachers - The DRAGON MATHS series provides a sequential set of write-on maths workbooks. For the intermediate level you should use the last two books in the series, which are aimed at Year 7 maths and Year 8 maths, or you can use the previous books in the series for remedial study. Each workbook covers the following NZ Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum strands : Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics. DRAGON MATHS workbooks will give you the confidence that you are delivering material at the correct curriculum level to prepare your class for secondary education and are an effective way to improve maths results in all topics, school-wide.

Author description

Wiesje Geldof (pronounced Vee-sha) was born in the Netherlands and both her mother and father were maths educators and authors. Wiesje immigrated to New Zealand in 1979 and completed a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science at Canterbury University and then went to Christchurch Teachers College. She began her teaching career at Christchurch Girls’ High School and was later appointed Head of Maths at Oxford Area School. In 1995 she moved to the Bay of Plenty and taught at Te Puke High School. Wiesje has been involved in writing mathematics resources for over 30 years. In the Netherlands she co-authored a series of books for Intermediate school level and while in Canterbury was part of the writing team for the National Curriculum Mathematics textbook series (K. Catley). This series was also published in Britain. In 1998 Wiesje co-founded her own educational publishing company, Sigma Publications Ltd, and began writing Sigma's first titles, the NZMC Homework Book series. “Maths is an essential skill and all skills have to be practised to become learned. I try to make my maths books interesting and use everyday situations to illustrate the use of maths. I believe write-on books reduce the tedium of copying out problems and make the practice required to become better at maths easier and more enjoyable for students.”
